Compulsory Basic Training

Welcome to your first step into the world of motorcycling! Compulsory Basic Training, or CBT, is the official starting point for every new rider in the UK. Crucially, it’s not a test, but a day of structured training designed specifically to make sure you can ride safely and confidently on your own.

Here at Alternative Motorcycle Training, we’ve helped hundreds of new riders from Brighton, Newhaven, and across Sussex earn their CBT certificate. For that reason, we've created this guide which contains everything you need to know to feel prepared and excited for your day.

What Exactly is a CBT?

A CBT is a government-mandated course that, upon completion, allows you to legally ride a moped or a motorcycle up to 125cc on the road. It was introduced to ensure all riders have the basic skills and knowledge needed to handle a bike safely.

Therefore, the key thing to remember is that you cannot fail a CBT. If you don't get to the required standard in one day, you can simply come back for more training. Ultimately, our goal is to teach you, not to test you.

Who Needs to Take a CBT?

You will need to complete a CBT course if you want to:

Ride a moped (up to 50cc) if you passed your car driving test after 1st February 2001.

Ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc (with L-plates).

In addition, to take the course, you must be at least 16 years old and hold a UK provisional or full driving licence.

The 5 Elements of CBT: A Step-by-Step Breakdown

Your training day is split into five distinct elements.
You must complete each one to the instructor's satisfaction before moving on to the next.

Element 1: Introduction & Eyesight

First, your day begins in the classroom.
This is a relaxed session where your instructor will:

• Explain the basics of the CBT course.

• Discuss the importance of the right safety gear and clothing.

• Check your driving licence.

• Finally, perform an eyesight check – you must be able to read a number plate from 20 metres away.

Element 2: Practical On-Site Training

Next, you get hands-on with the motorcycle in a safe, off-road area. Here, you will learn:

• The function of all the controls (brakes, clutch, throttle, etc.).

• How to carry out basic daily machine checks.

• How to use the stand correctly and wheel the bike.

• And eventually, how to start and stop the engine.

Element 3: Practical On-Site Riding

Now it’s time to ride! In our safe training area, well away from public roads, you will practice several key skills.
For instance, you'll work on:

• Pulling away and stopping smoothly.

• Changing gears (on a manual bike).

• Slow-speed control and balance.

• Furthermore, you'll practice riding in a figure of eight and performing U-turns.

• Emergency braking.

Our instructors at our Brighton and Newhaven sites are experts at helping nervous riders build confidence. As a result, this stage is always taken at your own pace.

Element 4: On-Road Theory

After your practical session, it's back to the classroom for a vital pre-road briefing. In this session, we will cover:

• The Highway Code and legal requirements.

How to ride defensively and anticipate hazards.

• Proper road positioning.

• Above all, the importance of visibility.

Element 5: Practical On-Road Riding

Finally, this is what the day has been building up to. You will ride on public roads for at least two hours, accompanied by your instructor, who will be in radio contact with you. During this ride, you’ll experience various road and traffic conditions, demonstrating you can apply everything you've learned and ride safely and independently.

What to Wear and Bring on the Day

Preparing properly is key to a successful and enjoyable day. Consequently, it's important to have everything you need before you arrive.

What you MUST bring:

Your UK Provisional or Full Driving Licence: Without a doubt, no licence means no training.

What you MUST wear:

• Sturdy Footwear: For example, over-the-ankle boots are best. No trainers or soft shoes.

• Durable Trousers: Motorcycle trousers or heavy denim jeans are essential. No tracksuits or leggings.

• A Hard-Wearing Jacket: Of course, a proper motorcycle jacket is ideal.

We can provide a helmet, gloves, and waterproofs, but feel free to bring your own if you have them.
