What is CBT training
Compulsory Basic Training, usually known as CBT, is the training you need before riding a moped or motorcycle on the road as a learner.
The course is designed to teach the basics of safe riding and to make sure you can control the bike properly before riding on the road. It includes five elements covering introductions and eyesight, machine controls, off road riding, briefings and on road riding.
Once you successfully complete the course, you will receive your DL196 certificate. This allows you to ride as a learner within the rules that apply to your licence and age.
- Element A – Introduction & Safety Briefing – legal requirements and protective gear.
- Element B – On-Site Training – bike controls and basic maintenance.
- Element C – Practical Riding Skills – slow control, gear changes, cornering, braking and emergency stops.
- Element D – Pre-Road Briefing – road rules and safe positioning.
- Element E – On-Road Ride – minimum two hours supervised riding around Newhaven and surrounding areas

What happens on your CBT day
Your CBT is not a test. It is a day of structured training designed to build you up step by step.
During the day, we will cover:
Introduction and eyesight check
We start by making sure the paperwork is in order and that you meet the basic eyesight standard.
Controls and safety checks
You will learn the main controls, how the bike works and the basic safety checks every rider should carry out.
Off road riding
Before going onto the road, you must show that you can control the bike safely. We work on moving off, stopping, balance, slow control, steering, gear use where relevant and observation.
Classroom and roadside briefings
We explain the key rules, signs, road positioning and the approach needed to ride safely on the road as a learner.
On road riding
When you are ready, you will complete the on road element with radio guidance from your instructor. This part is about applying what you have learned in real traffic conditions.
A proper training approach
Not everyone completes CBT at the same pace, especially if they have never ridden before. Our job is to train you properly and make sure you are safe.
We will always support you and coach you clearly, but successful completion depends on you reaching the required standard by the end of the course. That approach protects you and helps set you up to become a safer rider.
